What is the World Road Association?

The World Road Association (PIARC), created in Paris in 1909 as a non-political and non-profit association, is the oldest international association dealing with road network policy, techniques and management. It holds a unique place as an international forum for exchanging information and knowledge about all issues of road infrastructure and road transportation.  PIARC has 118 member governments and various other members (regional authorities, collective members and individual members) from 142 countries.

Although technical road issues have a major place in the Association, PIARC also covers economic, environmental, road safety and road infrastructure financing issues, as well as the development of the organization and missions of road administrations, all issues which are central to the concerns of road and road transport professionals and public authorities.

Every four years, PIARC holds a World Road Congress and an International Winter Road Congress.  These meetings, which are among the largest in the road sector, provide an opportunity for specialists from around the world to get updated on all road-related technology.

The Association also publishes a variety of information documents for specialists in the field:  reports presented at the congresses, terminology works, the Routes/Roads magazine and various other documents produced between congresses.
